I have two questions: I am putting all my course notes on onenote so the info is critical aswell as some other notebooks. Now problem is onedrive only gives 5GB by default which I just dont think will be enough so I am considering saving locally and then backing up on external media. Can this be done? I know it can be done on windows but getting conflicted info in regards to mac?? Second question If I were to only use onenote online instead of the desktop app is there a size limit on how much onenote storage I get? Or is this the same as if I were to sync locally using onedrive? Backing up notes is exclusive to the Windows version of OneNote 2016. It lets you export a page, section or notebook. None of these are available on the Mac version. But there’s ways around this. One way is to use to put Windows 10 on your Mac. By upgrading to Office 365 Home you can then run both versions of Onenote. Mac for the most part. Windows for features like backing up notebooks, embedding video, using tags, etc. In case you're wondering, this is what I've done and I highly recommend you consider it. You'll get all the advantages of the Windows version of Office 365 plus you're then able to use both Mac and Windows 10 software. I’ve a theory that another way is to look at your OneDrive, either online or desktop version. Usually in your OneDrive’s “Documents” folder you’ll see all your OneNote notebooks. So I haven’t tried it myself but copying these may be enough to use as a backup. Should anything happen, upload these again and it should work. After all, that folder is where Onenote puts notes. A third way is to use another Windows PC. This could be an older computer you haven’t used in a while, a friend’s, etc. Upgrade your Office 365 to Home, install Onenote on this Windows PC, then download and backup your notes. Once done, uninstall from the PC, deauthorize as one of your 5 computers, downgrade your Office 365 to what it was before. As for your second question, I suggest it is much safer to assume the limit is 5 GB. That’s the limitation on the free version of Microsoft accounts. Not to mention just about anything that says it is 'unlimited' soon turns into limited once enough people start using it lol. Overall, if you’re worried that 5 GB might not be enough for your data, don’t risk it. Especially if your data is critical. Upgrade to the paid version of Office 365. That brings 1 TB. Which means you won’t have to worry about it lol. Hope this helps.
